Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is bringing this eight-session, interactive workshop series to Indianola beginning February 6. Parents will have FUN while learning how families- no matter how com- plicated - can work together to resolve conflict and get involved in their child's life. The program is funded by 4RKids Early Childhood Iowa area. Together We Can will be presented by Sara Deppe Thursdays, Feb. 6 - April 3, 12:30-1:30 p.m. with no class on March 20. The series will take place at the First United Methodist Church, 307 West Ashland Avenue in Indianola. Child care will be provided by Wee Care Respite Nursery on location. Gustafson To Seek Re-election In House District 25 Stan Gustafson, Cumming, Representative for House District 25, announced Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the Warren County and Madison County caucuses that he is seek- ing re-election in the 2014 General Election. House Dis- trict 25 includes all of Madison County and part of War- ren County, including Winterset and Norwalk. Representative Gustafson won the Special Election January 7 to complete the term for the House Seat va- cated by newly-elected State Senator Julian Garrett. Gustafson beat his Democrat opponent, Pare Deichrnann, 70% to 30%. Gustafson was sworn in to the Iowa Legislature Janu- ary 14. He is the Vice Chairman of the Justice Systems budget subcommittee and serves on the Appropriations, Human Resources, Judiciary and Veterans' Affairs com- mittees. Gustafson graduated with a degree in Finance from the University of California, Berkeley. His participation in Naval ROTC led him to a 2nd Lieutenant Commis- sion in the Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam and af- ter completing his active duty service, he participated in the Reserves for the next 23 years, retiring as a-Lt. Colo- nel. Gustafson used the GI Bill to attend law school at night while working for Mattel Toys in California. Eventually, he opened his own practice, focusing on International Law. He enjoyed a long and successful career. He and his wife, Betty, who grew up on a farm in Dallas County, moved back to Cumming to be closer to their grandchil- dren. Local growers want to maintain qual- ity assurance to their consumers. A Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) workshop is being hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Warren County, at the Extension office in Indianola, to assist growers in maintaining that quality. Garrett Julian.Garrett@legis.iowa.gov. Specialty Courts The Judicial System has started several specialty courts that I don't believe the public is aware of, to deal with specific areas of the law. One that has been operat- ing in several counties for several years is the Drug Court. There are several adult drug courts and a hand- ful of juvenile drug courts. These courts offer more in- tensive contacts with drug offenders and involve judges and others who often are volunteers. Weare told that those going through these intensive programs are less likely to re-offend than offenders who do not go through these programs. Polk County has both adult and juve- nile drug courts. Warren County is implementing an adult drug Court program. Another special court is the Family Treatment Court. This court handles family situations where the parents have lost custody of their children or are in danger of losing custody. Drugs are often involved. As with the Drug Courts, there is intensive contact with the family members and we are told that in the majority of cases. the families are kept together.
