Norwalk Wrestling News

TuesdaF Jan. 15, the Norwalk Wrestlers attended the 2(13 Bob Sharp Invitational
in Ankeny. This was a "Bracket Tournament" and our Warriors came in 5th place out
of the eight schools that were in attendance. The teams that were present at the Invi-
tational were: Ankeny, Algona, South Tama, Mason City, Norwalk, DM Lincoln, Sioux
City East and DM Roosevelt.
Dyldn DeFreece (106) for Norwalk, came in 6th place. His record for the season is
5-11. Trevor Baack (113) took 5th place. His record for the season is 1-7. Kenny Onstot
(120) placed 6th at the Invitational with a record now of 1-8.
What a season it has been for Warrior, Zach Johnston (126). He got third place in
his bracket. His impressive record is 20-5. Dominic Debban (132) has been busy this
wrestling season stepping into this weight class often for the varsity team. I do not
have an accurate record for Debban at this time; however, I know he has been work-
ing hard and has had a few wins.
I could really go on about this next young man. Austin Pierangeli (138), like
Johnston, also secured 3rd place at this event. Pierangeli also has a very impressive
record for this season and that is 19-4. He has had quite a successful season. Jesse
Cowie (145) placed 4th in his weight bracket. His record, to date, is 7-9.
Erich Voitel (195) of the Varsity wrestling team at Chariton.
Warrior Casey Rudolf (152) was out of the bracket early when Levi Kaufman of ,.
South Tama secured a fall in that match. Rudolf is another wrestler whose record
information I do not currently have. Dusten Saltz (160) placed 5th in Ankeny. He
won a decisioned match against Ross Simms of Ankeny and then went on to lose a
major decisioned match against Kolton Smith of South Tama. His record as a first
year varsity wrestler is 14-7.
Norwalk's Nathan Johnston (170) placed 4th. In his first match he secured a fall
over Billy O'Neil from Mason City. His next match was against Erik Lux from South
Tama. Lux securedthe fall that match. N. Johnston has a record of 14-8 at the time of
this tournament.
At 182 pounds, Erich Voitel wrestled himself into second place at this event. Voitel
secured a fall his first match over John Kluding from DM Roosevelt. He then won his
next match which was a decisioned match against Kyle Llewelyn from South Tama.
He lost his final match against Garrett Johnson, as it was a decisioned 8 to 4. Voitel's
record is 7-1.
Trystan Minnis (195) worked hard in Ankeny and secured himself 4th place. His
record is 8-11. Jake Kestel (285) is a freshman wrestling his first year of varsity and he Norwalk High School wrestler, Austin Pierangeli (138).
secured5th place in Ankeny. His record is 2-10.
Our Warriors wrestled at home against the Chargers from Chariton and the Scar-
lets from East High School Tuesday, Jan. 15. The dual had us first wrestle against the
Chariton Chargers. Norwalk started things off with Pierangeli (138) losing a major
decisioned match against Tyler Nance of Chariton. Cowie (145) wrestled hard; how-
ever, the match ended in a decisioned win for Stephen McCurdy of Chariton. Rudolf
(152) secured a fall over Evan Havick, putting Norwalk on the scoreboard.
Saltz (160) secured the second fall of the evening over Connor Grgurich, folIowed
by N. Johnstor (170) securing Norwalk a third fall over Cody Stevenson from Chariton.
Chariton's Carter Isley secures a fall over our Kevin Onstot (182). Voitel (195) brought
Norwalk back into focus when he secured a fall over Trevin Nance. The team scores
at this point of the dual are Norwalk 24, Chariton 13.
Minnis (220) secures another fall over Chris Wright. Kestel (285) lost a decisioned
match against Jacob Cohen with a score of 7 points for Kestel, 10 points for Cohen.
DeFreece (106) secured a fall over Broc Johnson of Chariton. Onstot (113) took the
forfeited round for Norwalk and then Chariton wrestler, Nic Ryan secured a fall
over Norwalk wrestler, Chase Fouts (120). Team scores: Norwalk 42, Chariton 22.
Our grtys are looking good. Jake Kestel (285). He is a Freshman!
The final two rounds of this first part of the dual had Z. Johnston (126), Norwalk,
up against Devin Harberts. This match ended in a decisioned win for Johnston. Debban
(132) wrestled the last match against Tanner Poush from Chariton. PouCh secured a
fall over Debban giving this dtfal a final set of scores of Norwalk 45, Chariton 28.
Without much of a break, the guys came back out to face the wresting team from
"East High School. This dual began with the 145 pounders, Cowie for Norwalk and
Josh Davis for East. Davis puts. East on the board first when he secured the fall over
Cowie. Rudolf (152) put Norwalk on the board when he secured the next fall over
Chase Reynolds. Saltz (160), Norwalk, lost a decisioned match against Makram
Ibraheem with a match score of 7 to 10. N. Johnston (170) and Voitel (182) secured
fall victories over the East High pals. Team scores stand at Norwalk 18, East High 9.
Minnis (195) also secured a fall over Jonathon Evans from East. The next three
matches were falls secured by Alex Contrras, East over our Zach Swanson (220),
Brandon Haus, of East, over Kestel (285) and Devlan Fisher, East, over DeFreece
(106). Baack (113) stepped onto the mat and took the next forfeited round which
brings us to scores of Norwalk '30, East 27.
The East High Scarlets kept Lheir own momentum going when their Demarcus
Dameron secured another fall over Onstot (120). Next up, Z. Johnston (126) for the Trystan Minnis (195) of the Norwalk Varsity Wrestling team. Photos submitted.
