Box 325, Norwalk, IA 50211 Member of: National Newspaper Iowa Newspaper Association Association GEHRING SAFE Concluded from p. 1 l decided to move the safe to my home in Norwalk and made some plans tomove it. I figured I could move the safe in a U-haul trailer and pull it with my 1980 Horizon. I figured it couldn't be that difficult foolish me. A few days later I appeared on the scene with a two wheeled U-haul, a "Come A long" and some chain to secure the load. After much effort I did get it loaded in the trailer and secured, but I was getting doubts about the whole plan. Once I got it on the road I knew it was going to be a very long two hundred miles back to Norwalk. I noticed very quickly that the Horizon was too light for the job, every crack in the road was trans- mitted to the body of the little car. With perseverance and some luck, I mad6 it home and backed the, trailer into my garage and unloaded my prize, put it against the back wall and there it set. After the trip was over I found that the rear shocks in the Horizon were damaged and I had to replace them, which appeared to be the extent of any problems. This is where the safe remained for several years; I would dust it off occasionally and sweep away the ga- rage spiders that loved to put spider webs in its wheels. As you can tell, my garage isn't exactly spotless. A year or so ago I was in conversation with the Norwalk Police Chief Ed Kuhl and some friends and the Chief said he was looking for a safe for the office Bingo. I told him of my prize I had in my ga- rage and he said he would like to see it. He came and looked at the safe and said he thought it would work and I told him it was his and he did the moving. He said no problem and arrangements were made. When the moving day came a collection of men and equipment appeared and the moving started. We pushed the safe out on the driveway where the forklift could load it. They decided to leave it on the forklift and transport it to itsnew home in the Norwalk Police Station and up the street it went. The Gehring safe has found a home in the new Norwalk Police Station. At one hundred and eight years old, it is in use every working day. To me that is quite a record.
