Norwalk Warriors Vol. 51 No. 36 Norwalk, Iowa 50211 USPS No. 395-120 Phone 981-0406emaih news@norwalknewspaper.com Thursday, February 7, 2019 Snow Ordinance Information from the City of Norwalk The City of Norwalk would like to remind residents of the ordinances that pertain to snow and ice removal. If you have any questions or concerns about the City's snow ordinance, please do not hesitate to call Public Works at 981-9527. How do I know when the Snow Ordinance has been activated and deactivated? The Public Works Director activates the snow ordinance when the forecasts are indicating a snow event or they are preparing to dispatch snow plows. In an effort to give property owners the opportunity to get their vehicle(s) removed from the street, Public Works tries to give ample notice. Residents should check the City's website (www.norwalk.iowa.gov), Facebook page, sign up for the City's new text alert system or call City Hall at 981-0228 option 4 to check if the snow ordinance has been activated. Make sure to check back periodically to see if/when it has been lifted. Please Note: It does not matter how many times a snowplow has been down your street, police will continue to ticket and tow while the ordinance is activated. What are the rules regarding parking a vehicle on the street during the winter? City code states that it is unlawful to park on any street during the time of any snowfall (69.10). Any vehicle parked on the street during a snowfall faces the possibility of receiving a $35 parking ticket and/or impoundment. It is important to remember the times when you cannot be parked on the street. By removing vehicles from the street the plows can work more quickly and efficiently and potential damage to personal property is eliminated. This also allows for our main thoroughfares to get emergency response vehicles to residential areas expeditiously. What about my sidewalks during or after it snows? It is the responsibility of the abutting property owners to remove snow and ice accumulations promptly from sidewalks. If the property owner does not remove snow and/or ice accumulations within a reasonable time, the City may do so and ultimately assess the costs against the property owner for collection in the same manner as property tax. For purposes of enforcement, a reasonable amount of time is generally 24 hours after the snow or ice accumulations end. While the City realizes it can be frustrating to finish clearing your driveway and then have the plow come by, the snow removal policy adopted by the City Council indicates that snow placed in driveways by City plows is the responsibility of the property owner to remove. Snow from a private driveway may not be placed on or pushed onto or across a City street. Plan to attend City of Norwalk's Community Chat Held the 2nd Saturday of each month, 9-10:30 a.m. at City Hall, 705 North Ave. Residents are invited to visit with city representatives about a variety of topics. Hy-Vee Dietitians to Provide Free Biometric Screenings For the second year, Hy-Vee, Inc. will provide free biometric screenings throughout its eight-state region during Heart Health Month in February. Hy-Vee dietitians working out of Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobiles will offer the free biometric screenings to customers at 150 Hy-Vee stores. Appointments will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. A biometric screening is a combination of measurements and readings about certain health factors that may help in identifying potential risk factors for chronic diseases or conditions, like heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes. The dietitians will collect a blood sample from a finger prick that will be used to determine cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and glucose levels. They will also take resting blood pressure; measurements of height, weight, and waist; and will calculate body mass index. The entire screening process typically takes 15 to 20 minutes and all results will be reviewed and received during the screening. Each person who receives a screening will be given a Heart Health giveaway bag that includes samples, coupons, and educational materials. Biometric screenings will be offered locally at Hy- Vee stores on Tuesday, February 12th at 4605 Fleur Drive, Des Moines; Thursday, February 14th at 4815 S. Maple Drive, Pleasant Hill; and Wednesday, February 20th at 910 N. Jefferson Way, Indianola. The screenings will be held from 7:00-11:00 a.m. all three days.
