Treasurer Fitzgerald Has a
Vault Full of Treasures for
Valentine's Day
State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald may not be
playing cupid for Valentine's Day, but he is looking
to reunite owners with their lost and forgotten
treasures. "Currently on the list, we have lots of Love,
several Beaus, dozens of Flowers, abundance of
Candy and even a Sweetpies of Cedar Rapids,"
Fitzgerald said. "In addition to money, we have
mementos from safe deposit boxes waiting to be
reclaimed from our vault. Contents stem from
engagement rings, lockets, cards and love letters."
Treasurer Fitzgerald encourages all Iowans to
check the website for a forgotten treasure. "Check
regularly and check often," Fitzgerald advises.
Throughout the year, new property is uploaded, so
even if you have claimed property in the past, there
is a chance your name could reappear.
The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt has returned over
$239 million to more than 573,000 individuals since
Fitzgerald started it in 1983. Unclaimed property
refers to money and other assets held by financial
institutions or companies that have lost contact with
the property's owner for a specific period of time.
State law requires these institutions and companies
to annually report unclaimed property to the state
treasurer's office. The assets are then held until the
owner or heir of the property is found. Common forms
of unclaimed property include savings or checking
accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance
policies, utility security deposits and safe deposit box
contents.

Corndog Checkoff Tax Form Donations
Support Iowa State Fairgrounds
It's tax time in Iowa and that means it's time for Iowans to consider supporting
the Iowa State Fairgrounds with a donation through the Corndog Checkoff. Help
us continue the momentum!
The Corndog Tax Checkoff provides Iowans an easy opportunity to participate
in the renovation and preservation of the historic Fairgrounds. All donations
are tax deductible!
The "State Fair" checkoff, nicknamed the Corndog Checkoff, can be found on
line 57b of Iowa tax form 1040. According to Iowa law, tax tilers may contribute
$1(or more) to the Corndog Tax Checkoff. The amount specified is reduced from
your refund or added to the amount owed.
In 2017, the Corndog Checkoff reached the milestone of raising a total of more
than $2 million to renovate and preserve the Iowa State Fairgrounds! The average
donation has been nearly $10 per tax payer. But there is still more work to do,
more traditions to preserve, and additional barns and buildings to save.
Iowans can show they care by contributing to the Corndog Checkoff. With
over 1.5 million tax returns filed each year in Iowa, every contribution counts!
The Iowa State Fair is a favorite destination of a million visitors each year!
The economic impact of the annual Fair is conservatively estimated at $100
million, with another $30 million generated from more than 200 interim events
held on the Fairgrounds each year.
The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation is the non-profit 501(c)3
fundraising arm of the Iowa State Fair charged with raising funds to renovate
and preserve the historic 445-acre Iowa State Fairgrounds. To raise the required
funds, the Foundation seeks support through corporate donations, individual
contributions, planned giving, in-kind services, and the annual Corndog Checkoff.
The 2018 Iowa State Fair will be August 9th through 19th. "Nothing Compares
to State Fair Moments!"
