OBITUARY
JOHN J. MCCORMICK, SR.
A Celebration of Life
Service was Tuesday, Feb.
10, at O'Leary Celebration
of Life Center in Norwalk
for John Joseph McCor-
mick St., 62, Norwalk. Pri-
vate burial will be in St.
john Cemetery in Cum-
ruing, Memorials to the
family to be used at their
discretion will be accept-
ed.
John Joseph, the son of
Pete'.. and Dorothy (Gro-
terd vs) McCormick, was
born Jily 13, 1952, in Des
Mvi s. He was the
you: ._,0st son of three chil-
dre:b growing up on the
south side of Des Moines.
He L _'duated from Dowl-
ing HAgh School in 1971.
Following high school
John played semi-profes-
sional football with New-
ton Night Hawks and the
Des Moines Knights. He
also was involved with
competition water skiing
at Clearwater Beach.
At a young age, John
achieved his pilot's license
and liked building "mus-
cle" cars. He was overall
athletic and good at every-
thing he did. He played in
bowling leagues, softball,
billiards and golfing tour-
naments. John's best ac-
complishments were his
three children, Courtney, JJ
John J. McCormick, Sr.
and Dave.
John was a thh:d gener-
ation railroad engineer
starting his career with
Chicago Northwestern
and later Union Pacific
Railroads. He retired in
August 2013 after working
40 years. John was a mem-
ber of the Brotherhood of
Railroad Workers union,
and Grandview Golf Club.
John leaves to cherish
his memory his children,
Courtney (Chris) McCor-
mick-Thomas, JJ (Irina)
McCormick, David Mc-
Cormick; his mother, Dor-
othy "Murph" McCor-
mick; a sister, Pat (Gary)
Woody; a brother, Mike
(Tina) McCormick; and
five grandchildren, Dylan,
Jaylen, Matthew, Michael
and Mason.

OBITUARY
FRANCES MCDONALD
Frances Marie Mc-
Donald went to be with the
Lord Saturday, Jan. 31. Af-
ter battling pneumonia,
she decided it was time to
let go and take the next
step.
Frances was the young-
est of four children of an
immigrant coal miner
from Austria. She grew Up
on an acreage outside of
Carney and graduated
from Ankeny High School.
She met the love of her life
at a roller rink on a Satur-
day night and after WWII
married and settled down
to raise a family. Her pas-
sions in life were her fam-
ily, her church, her home
and yard with the cardi-
nals and the squirrels.
She is survived by her
husband of 69 years,
Howard; daughter, Sandra
Kay (Paul) Stanbrough of
Alexander City, AL; son,
Craig Howard (Nancy) of
Prole; six grandchildren,
Michael (Stephane)
Tiedens, Matthew (Adri-
ane) Tiedens, Marie
(Christopher) Hanna,
Stephanie (Edward, Jr.)
Rhodes, Elizabeth and An-
Frances McDonald
drew, and eight great-
grandchildren, Kaine,
Grace, Alexander, Au-
tumn, Meredith, Maddox,
Oliver and Allie.
Frances never met any-
one she did not consider a
friend. She made the world
a better place with her pres-
ence and will be sorely
missed. There will be a cel-
ebration of her life April 11,
2015 at noon at Wakonda
Christian Church. In lieu of
flowers, memorial dona-
tions may be directed to
Wakonda Christian Church.
OBITUARY
ELVA STONEBRAKER
Elva Lucille Stonebrak-
er "Stoney" was born Au-
gust 22, 1922 to Ethel Vio-
la (Paine) and Alfred Lee
Stonebraker in Lucas
County and passed away
at Taylor House Hospice
in Des Moines, Sunday,
Feb. 1, at the age of 92.
She was raised in Lucas
and Wayne Counties and
graduated from Cambria
High School. She attended
college at Drake Universi-
ty in Des Moines. She
played softball, profes-
sional women's basketball
and bowled. She enjoyed
woodworking, horseback
riding, her animals, Drake
women's b?sketball games
and traveling. She was
baptized at Galilee Baptist
Church.
Elva moved to Chicago
to play women's profes-
sional basketball. She went
to a trade school and
learned tool and die so she
could work on the B29
Bomber engines during
World War II. After the
war she moved back to
Iowa and spent most of her
adult life in Des Moines.
Elva retired as Parts Man-
ager of Elliotts Beechcraft
after 28 loyal years of ser-
vice.
Elva was preceded in
death by her parents; a
brother, Lee Stonebraker;
three sisters, Marie Pear-
son, Audrey Stonebraker
and Jessie Kirkpatrick; and
long-time friend, Blanche
Wallis.
She is survived by her
nephew, Don Stonebraker
of Cedar Rapids; two niec-
es, Lois Downard of Chad-
ton and Rose Heston of
Elva Stonebraker
Derby; numerous great-
nieces and nephews; and a
host of other relatives and
many long-time friends.
Graveside services
were held FridaTfi Feb. 6, at
the Chariton Cemetery,
Chariton. Elva requested
donations to the Animal
Rescue League or Taylor
House Hospice. To share a
