As Phillips took the Eagle Oath, all Eagle Scouts attending the cer- emony silently renewed their oath. Before being consid- ered an Eagle candidate, Phillips was required to work his way through six ranks and earn a minimum of 21 merit badges. To date, Phillips has earned 24 merit badges. The 12 required merit badges in- clude: First Aid; Citizen- ship in the Community; Citizenship in the Nation; Citizenship in the World; Communications; Per- sonal Fitness; Emergency Preparedness; Environ- mental Science; Personal Management; Swimming; Camping; and Family Life. Each of the required merit badges help the Scout be- come a well-rounded, in- formed and involved citi- zen. First Aid was one of the first merit badges Phillips earned. Each Eagle candidate is also required to plan, de- velop and lead others in an Eagle project. The project is to be helpful to a reli- gious institution, a school, community, or other wor- thy organization and must be approved by the Troop's Scoutmaster, the Troop's " Committee and the Coun- cil. Phillips led a group of volunteers who con- structed four outdoor benches at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. The benches were dedi- cated to the memory of parishioner Jim Oetker. Phillips raised all the funds for the project through donations and a bake sale. The support of Cumming American Le- gion Post #562, Knights of Columbus Council #7556 and Norwalk Hardware was invaluable, along with the generous support of parishioners of the church. Only two percent of all Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle, a strong testa- ment to its high standards. Among those who have worn the Eagle Scout badge are some of America's finest athletes, political leaders, scientists, astronauts and business leaders. Troop 301, char- tered in 2002, currently has over 40 members and sev- eral are Life Scouts work- ing toward their Eagle awards. Introducing Trevor Brockett- one of 1 Jorwalk's own.
