Taylor Redenius, Grace Wood, Eva Newland (front row), Emily Ellis, Brett Dawson and Tevka Lackmann (back row), all students in Shelly Vroegh and Cindy Spurr's second grade classes at Oviatt Elementary, came up with a fun way to raise money for the people devastated by the earthquake in Haiti. These students came up with the idea of having a "Hats for Haiti Day" which was held Friday, Feb. 5. For a donation, the students of Oviatt could wear a hat on this day to show their sup- port for those affected by this terrible tragedy. Teachers are proud of these stu- dents for Coming up with this idea, as it allowed Oviatt to raise $1,606. The money was donated to Meals from the Heartland, a group based right here in Central Iowa. This organization is currently packaging meals that will be sent directly to Haiti. The students were told that the money they raised will help over 10,000 people. The students appreciate everyone who contributed to this project which helped such a worthy cause. Photo submitted.
