LEE, WARREN COUNTY, IOWA Upcoming Norwalk sues that matter to hard- ** Not share an adver- Forum: The Norwalk Lis- tening Post will be held Friday, March 19, at 9-10 a.m. at Conference Room, City Hall, 705 North Ave. First-in-the-nation re- forms protect Iowa elec. tions and voters: The Iowa Senate voted March 1 to make our state the first in the nation to protect elec- tions from unregulated cash from big corporations and shadowy organiza- tions. Iowa is known as a place where all citizens decide who's elected, not just the wealthy and pow- erful. But the U.S. Su- preme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC threatened to change that reputation. By ruling that corpora- tions and unions have the same political free speech rights as you and I, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively erased all rules and limits on corporate spending in political campaigns. Iowa's reputation for elections that focus on is- working families is now at risk. In response, we are strengthening our laws to prevent a flood of anony- mous, negative advertise- ments funded by big cor- porations. Senate File 2354, which passed the Senate 49-1, will ensure that Iowans have a clearer picture of how big corporations at- tempt to influence our elections. It will require a corporation to: ** Add "paid for by" statements- including the name of the corporation or union - on all published and electronic communi- cations. ** Have authorization from its board of directors (or similar leadership body) before spending money to advocate for or against a candidate. ** File regular electronic reports with the Cam- paign Finance Disclosure Board and also report within 48 hours of making of an independent expen- diture. tising firm or consultant with a candidate or ballot issue committee that ben- efits from the corporation's independent expendi- tures. Finally, a foreign na- tional is prohibited from making an independent expenditure of any kind in Iowa. The legislation now goes to the Iowa House. To contact me when the Legislature is in session, call the Senate Switch- board at 515-281-3371. On weekends I can be reached at home at 515-961-6982, or e-mail at staci.appel@ legis.state.ia.us. !
