ServSafe is a national food safety certification course, offered in partner- ship with the National Restaurant Educational Foundation and the Iowa Restaurant Association. It incorporates years of hands-on sanitization practices with the latest research and FDA Food Code and those who par- ticipate in the course will be able to implement es- sential food safety prac- tices and create a standard of food safety within their establishments. The eight-hour course concludes with a certifica- tion exam. Iowa regula- tions require the person in charge of a foodservice to have demonstrated knowledge of food safety principles; ServSafe cer- tification is one way to demonstrate this knowl- edge: Certificates are valid for five years. Visit ServSafe.com for more in- formation about the ServSafe examination. It is necessary for par- ticipants to study the ServSafe manual at least two weeks prior to the April 7 workshop. Books may be picked up at the Polk County Extension of- rice in Altoona or can be mailed with a shipping and handling fee of $6. The price of the book itself is included in the $150 work- shop fee, which is payable in advance by cash, check or credit card.
