I Jolyssa Ginkens, Nor- walk, a student at North- western College in Orange City, is student teaching this semester. In order to be accepted into the teacher education program, students must maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average, sub- mit an entrance portfolio, successfully pass the Pre- Professional Skills Test and receive departmental recommendation. Ginkens is a senior and is majoring in elementary education at Northwest- ern College. She is student teaching 2nd grade at Shuler Elementary School in Clive and special edu- cation at Maple Grove El- ementary School in Des Moines. Ginkens is the daughter of Kim Ginkens of Norwalk. Dollar-A-Day Boys! A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps Michigan-based author Bill Jamerson will present a music and storytelling program about the Civil- ,ian Conservation Corps (CCC) at the Annett Na- ture Center Friday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the pub- lic and refreshments will be served, including CCC cookies. Jamers0n;s presentation "includes telling stories, singing original songs and showing a short video. He has performed at CCC re- unions around the country and at dozens of CC-C built national and state parks. The presentation is as en- tertaining as it is impor- tant, as honest as it is fun. It's about people both or- dinary and extraordinary, with stories of wit, charm and strength. This year is the 80th anniversary of the CCC. The Civilian Conserva- tion Corps was a federal works program created in 1933 by President Franklin Roosevelt in the heart of The Great Depression. During its nine year run, 49,000 young men served in Iowa camps. There was an average of 29 camps in operation for each year. The enrollees were paid $1 a day with $25 sent home to their families each month. The money put food on the table for the families back home. CCC enrollees planted over 30 million trees in Iowa, built hundreds of bridges, erected over 2,000 miles of telephone poles, helped farmers by repair- ing gullies, terracing hills, soil conservation projects, constructed truck trails, stocked fish and fought for  CCC built seve ....... , includ- ing Backbone State Park which houses a CCC Mu- NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES 1 Serapbooking Event April 6 A Spring Fling Scrapbooking Event is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, at Crossroads Church, 2601 Border St. in Norwalk. The Adoption Fundraiser is from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The cost is $25 per person with proceeds to support adoption and help young families get the funds needed to complete their families. Lunch and dinner will be available with a free-will donation. There will be door prizes and raffles. A prize will be awarded for the best one page and two page layouts.
