Iowa - Power Lunch" In early January, a call went out to the Norwalk Com- munity, asking for volunteer reading mentors - and we have wonderful news to share. Beginning in early March, training began for 15 vol- unteers and March 12, these volunteers began working with students who need a little extra boost - reading and being read to. We have been SO lucky in a number of areas, launch- ing this program: First, the Norwalk Community of people is always ready to help when called. Thanks to those who have already volunteered. Second, we thought we were going to start from scratch on this program; however, we have a parent in Norwalk, Amanda Fletcher, who is the Executive Di- rector in a program called "Everybody Wins! Iowa." This program is dedicated to increasing children's success in school through reading and mentoring experiences. Thanks to Amanda and her staff who are implementing "Everybody Wins! Iowa" at Oviatt. They train and do the background checks on the volunteers and help guide this exceptional program. Third, because "Everybody Wins[ Iowa" requires funding to implement in a school, we are very grateful to Kathi and Larry Zimpleman for their donation to get the ball rolling at Oviatt. When asked if they might con- sider a donation to help Norwalk Elementary Schools get a Community reading program off the ground, they were "100% behind this educational project. Thanks so much! In the future, we will need additional funding to keep this program going. We are actively pursuing grants from different sources. We will also be seeking additional volunteers in the future; but for now - we are thrilled with the 15 people working with the kids and want to get through there- mainder of the school year with these folks - hoping to expand the program next year. Way to go : Norwalk! When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. -Victor Frankl PHOTO PRINTING is a full commercial printer. *Flyers *Letterhead *Envelopes *Brochures *Magazines *Newsletters *Books, etc. Cll for a free estimate!
