Thursday, April 4, 2019 N/Warren Town and County News Page Three April is Child Abuse Prevention Month By Val Cameron, Council Coordinator, Child Abuse Prevention Council of Warren County April is nationally recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time for every community to come together to show its support for children and families. All children deserve great childhoods. We know that children raised in loving and supportive environments are more likely to do better academically, are shown to be more financially successful and contribute more to society as adults. The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Warren County works to prevent child abuse before it occurs by providing education, support and services to families. The following local programs are available in Warren County during the month of April: Stewards of Children Presentation on April 4th at 6:30 Wells Fargo building; Stewards of Children is a prevention-training program that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Blue Out Day- Friday, April 5th; EVERYONE is encouraged to wear blue on Friday, April 5th to show support for child abuse prevention. Bake Sale at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Indianola - Weekend of April 6th-7th; St. Thomas Aquinas Church will be conducting their annual chocolate chip cookie bake sale after Masses the weekend of April 6th with proceeds going to support local child abuse prevention programs. Connection Matters- Relationships are essential to building healthy brains and healthy communities. Connections Matter strives to help build healthy communities. April 9th, Serendipity Preschool, Norwalk 6-7:30 pm Donation canisters at Indianola, Norwalk and Carlisle Fareway stores all month Cookie Sale at Indianola Hy-Vee - Monday, April 22nd - Sunday, April 28th, 912 Jefferson, Indianola; Hy-Vee will donate $.50 for every dozen of Hy-Vee bakery cookies sold during the week of April 22-28. Proceeds will go to support child abuse prevention programming in Warren County. Carry your groceries home in a paper bag decorated by Indianola Community School students. Child Abuse Prevention Cook-Out- Indianola Hy-Vee, Saturday April 27th from 11:00-1:00 hamburgers/hot dogs, chips, drinks for $5 each with half going to your child abuse prevention programming. Papa Murphy's Pizza Night for Child Abuse Prevention Month- Wednesday April 24th 4-7 pm 10% of sale will go toward prevention activities in Warren County EDUCATE others about resources that prevent child abuse and what they can do to get involved; PARTICIP&TE in local prevention efforts and help raise awareness about the importance of healthy childhoods; DONATE to organizations that support families and prevent child bPse; and ADVOCATE for legislation that positively)mpacts children and families in our state. Family Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt It's a hunt for the golden egg! Children are required to bring their own flashlight (size limited to D cell batteries). An adult must accompany all children. Each child is limited eggs. For ages 2-12. The egg hunt will be held Saturday, April 20th, from 8:15- 9:00 pm at McAninch Sports Complex. Bike Safety Day The Norwalk Police, Fire, and Park and Rec Departments are sponsoring a Bike Safety Day. Kids will bring their own bikes to the Public Safety parking lot, get their bike inspected, and ride the safety course. For ages 5 to 5th grade. Each child will have a chance to win prizes. Must be present to win. Event date is May 4th. OPALS - Older People with Active Life Styles Senior Citizen Exercise Everyone ages 55 and older is invited to attend a free exercise program that will include stretching and toning. We will meet at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church (new location) located at 515 Sunset Drive. Registration is not required. This is a continuous program every Monday and Wednesday from 10-10:30 a.m. OPALS Well.Seasoned Potluck (The meat as well as the people) All are invited, age 55 or older, to attend a potluck dinner to enjoy and socialize with the Park and Recreation staff. Meat, t:ableware, and coffee/ beverage are provided. Dust off the cookbooks and be creative to bring a side dish and]or dessert to share with everyone. After the meal we will have some form of entertainment from local talent. Let us know your email address and we,will send out reminders with what meat that is prepared on that day. Call oremail the office to register two days before the event. Family Bingo Night Stop by the library on Sunday evenings and enjoy a game of bingo. Bring munchies or snacks to share with all, and we will provide the beverages. All ages are invited to participate. Bingo callers will be Norwalk Lions Club members. Terrace Hill Mother's Day Tea Celebrate the mother in your life at the Terrace Hill Mother's Day Tea! This special event will take place on Saturday, May 11th from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Terrace Hill, Iowa Governor's Residence and National Historic Landmark. Guests will enjoy scones, tea sandwiches, and sweets prepared by Terrace Hill Chef Sharon Van Verth, all while admiring the Victorian splendor of this 1869 landmark. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Terrace Hill Partnership, a non-profit organization that supports necessary conservation and restoration projects at Terrace Hill.
