By Nancy Kuehl, Director OFFICE INFORMATION Pick up registration forms 24 hours a day at the Parks and Recreation office or print them off our website: www.ci.norwalk.ia.us. You can mail registration forms, place them in our drop box or walk in. Our office is located at 1100 Chatham Ave. (Public Safety Bldg.). Of- fice hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The drop box is open 24/7! If you have any questions, call us at 981-9206. Online registration is available. (see website: www.d, norwalk.ia.us) UPCOMING REGISTRATIONS Bike Safety Day, April 30 through May 11; Coed Slow Pitch SB, April 30 through May 11; Dog Obedience, April 30 through May 11; Swim Lessons, May 1; Hershey Track Meet, May 16 or May 25. HERSHEY TRACK MEET This track meet is for children currently in third through sixth grades. This free track meet is the first step in qualifying for the state meet. A minimum of five Iowa children will receive an all-expense paid trip to the national meet courtesy of Hershey Chocolate Company. Events include 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600- meter runs, 4 X 100-meter relays, standing long jump and softball throw. Registration Dates: Registration will be done during PE Classes. Program Dates: Wednes- day, May 16, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (6th grade); Pro- gram Dates: Friday, May 25, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (3rd to 5th grade); Location: Norwalk High School Track; Cost: Free. BIKE SAFETY DAY The Norwalk Police Department, Norwalk Fire De- partment, along with Norwalk Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Bike Safety Day. Participants will bring their bikes to the Norwalk Police Department parking lot and get their bike inspected and ride the safety course. After the safety course, the Mayor will lead a bike ride in the area surrounding the Public Safety Build- ing. Each registered child (ages 5 to fifth grade) will have a chance to win miscellaneous prizes. Drawing will take place during lunch and you must be present to win. Registration Dates: April 30 through May 11; Program Date: Saturday, May 19; Time: 10 a.m.; Loca- tion: Norwalk Public Safety Building; Equipment Needed: Your Bicycle; Cost: FREE. DOG OBEDIENCE SCHOOL This is a basic obedience class using reward based training methods. We will cover simple commands such as sit, down, coming when called and loose leash walk- ing. The class will also focus on correcting Common Behavior Problems like jumping, chewing, bolting and potty issues. The class will also include some tricks to show off to your .friends. Dogs must be at least six months old to attend and current on all vaccinations. Children are welcome to attend, but a responsible adult should be the main person working with the dog. This class is a good beginning step to other training classes such as Therapy or Agility. But the most important as- pect of the class is that it is a fun bonding experience for you and yptlr dog. The class is taught by a certified dog trainer wj5 years of experience in personal in-home dog tra'mingand dog training classes. Tools needed for the class will be a nylon or leather collar and leash, your dog's favorite treats and a positive' attitude. Choke BANK chains, prong collars and flexi-leads will not be allowed for use in class. This class will be held outside so wear the proper attire. Instructor: Dan Pastor; Location: Billy O. COED SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL This is a-slow pitch recreation league and a 12-inch softball will be used. Rosters must contain a minimum of 10 players and no more than 20 players. Players must be 18 years old and out of high school. Umpires pro- vided. Eight weeks of play, depending upon number of teams. Registration Dates: April 30 through May 11; Program Dates: League play begins June 3; Days: Sun- days; Time: 3 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. (dependent on # of teams); Location: Norwalk-McAninch Sports Com- plex; Team Fee: $291.50 (includes state sales tax); Mini- mum/Maximum teams: 4/8. SENIOR CITIZEN EXERCISE ** New location/time** Everyone ages 55 and older is invited to attend a free exercise program that will include stretching and ton- ing. We will meet at the Norwalk Christian Church, 701 Main St. Time: Monday and Thursday mornings from 10-10:30 a.m. This program will run until May 17. During the course of the investigation, Pauline Smith, 54, Des Moines, was charged with interference with official acts. The incident remains under investigation. March 30 Des Moines Police De- partment reported recov- ering a 12-gauge shotgun that had been reported sto- len to Warren County au- thorities in January 2010 in a burglary.
