This year the school will pro- vide free physicals Satur- da May 1, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., in DMU's Medical Educa- tion Center, 3200 Grand Ave. in Des Moines. DMU physicians and students have partnered with phy- sicians and staff from Iowa Heart Center, as well as other local clinicians as Des Moines University TOPS (Team of Providers for Students), to provide the exams. In addition to educational information on health topics, the event will also include free EKGs and if-indicated ECHOs. All services are free. The EKGs and ECHOs are pain-free screenings of the heart that take only a few minutes to complete. Certified cardiologists will read the results and any unusual findings will be reported for follow up with the child's physician. Sudden death due to heart problems is rare in young athletes, estimated at one Athletes in 200,000. Our goal is to reduce this risk even fur- ther by screening before the sports season starts for potential cardiac prob- lems, including other ab- normalities that are much less serious, but still im- portant for athletes to be aware of. Each student must. bring a completed paren- tal consent form and com- pleted physical history forms with them. These forms can be downloaded from www.dmu.edu. All students should wear shorts and t-shirts for the exam to make it easier to do the physical. Females should wear a sports bra. If you have any ques- tions, visit www.dmu.edu or call 515-271-1374 for more info. ) County Receives Food, Shelter Grant Warren Countv has been chosen to receive $10,806 in federal funds under the t:mergency Food and She!ter National Board Program to supple- ment and expand ongoilg feffoLLs to provide sheller, food and supportive ser- vices for the nation's hun- gry, homeless and people in economic crisis.
