Racing on the Hill
Grab the family and come out for the 13th Annual
Norwalk Soap Box Derby Street Race on Saturday,
June 1st.
For those of you who have never seen it, you are in
for a treat. Soap Box Derby racing has been around
since the 1930's. Youth ages 8-17 from all over Iowa
come to Norwalk to compete in downhill, gravity-
powered racers that they build themselves with a
parent/adult to compete for a chance to represent
Norwalk at the 82nd annual All-American Soap Box
Derby.
The All-American Soap Box Derby is the premier
youth and family oriented racing program in the
United States. Established in 1933, it is an American
tradition. Racing is not just for boys, many girls
compete also. The Norwalk race is one of 450 races
held throughout the country each season.
The race is held on Main Street going downhill from
the Christian Church to Elm and starts at 9:00 a.m.
Come cheer the racers on. For some it is the first
time that they have competed in a race. This race is
race stock, super-stock, and masters divisions.
Bleachers will be set up on Main Street for spectators.
The Christian Church's youth group will be selling
breakfast and lunch at the church.
There will also be a raffle to help defray costs of
the race. There are many great prizes donated by
local business owners and residents. Anyone wishing
to donate can contact Pat Wahl at 515-981-4928.
Drawing for the raffle items will be held at the race
and you need not be present to win.

National Public Works Week
Celebrates Community
By Shelley Stravers
In accordance with the tradition of the American
Public Works Association, those who work in
professions that provide and maintain public facilities
and services will be honored during National Public
Works Week, May 19th through May 25th. This week
is meant to celebrate the contributions of public works
professionals as well as the communities they serve.
We value our communities and the role public works
professionals play in keeping them safe and
functioning smoothly. Our objective is designed to
increase public awareness of their contributions as
well as to enlighten the public about the duties,
practices, and goals of public works professionals.
Public works professionals include those who
manage water, sewer, public transportation, and
refuse removal systems as well as those responsible
for maintaining public buildings and grounds. They
are, in short, the people who maintain and improve
the systems and services vital to a community's
health, safety and comfort.
In celebration of National Public Works Week,
members of your Norwalk Public Works Department
will be at the local Farmers Market on Friday, May
24th. The staff will have several pieces of equipment
on display and will be happy to answer questions.
Bring your family and stop by to see the equipment
up close. This would be a great time to thank your
Public Works staff for their hard work and dedication
to your community!
