NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES I
JROTC unit. Students in
9th through 12th grade
may join the JROTC. Cadet
Major Francis Kelly is cur-
rently the only student in
the Ankeny school district
that attends. His younger
brother Matt will also be
attending JROTC next
school year.

Cadet Francis Kelly IV
is the son of Fran and
Debbie Kell who are both
graduates of Norwalk
High School now living in
Ankeny and grandson of
Dave and Carol Knob-
lauch and Marilyn Kell
all of Norwalk. He is a jun-
ior at Ankeny High School
and has been selected for
Battalion Commander of
the Red Bull JROTC (Jun-
ior Reserve Officer Train-
ing Corp) unit at Central
Campus in Des Moines.
Battalion Commander is
the highest cadet leader-
ship position available in
the unit. It's been over five
years since a first-year ca-
det has been selected as
Battalion Commander.
Cadet Major Kelly was
also awarded the Cadet of
the Year award, Cadet
Challenge Award, Presi-
dential Physical Fitness
Award and the Military
Officers' Association of
America Award for leader-
ship, academic achieve-
ment and high potential
for military leadership. He
is involved in all four ex-
tracurricular teams within
the unit-Marksmanship
Team, Drill Team, Color
Guard and the Raider
Team. The Raider Team is
a select group of Cadets
that compete against other
JROTC units in endurance
events throughout the
Midwest. These events in-
clude the Army Physical
Fitness test, a 10k timed
march/race with boots and
full uniform and 251b. ruck
pack, an obstacle course, a
timed rope bridge compe-
tition that simulates cross-
ing a river and others.
The Red Bull JROTC
unit has 107 candidates
from 14 different Des
Moines area schools that
are participating in the
of Amy Papp of Norwalk,
was among 230 graduating
seniors at Northwestern
College's commencement
ceremonies Saturday, May
12, in Orange City.
Papp graduated Magna
Cum Laude with a 3.70-
3.89 Grade Point Average.
She majored in public re-
lations and economics.
Nineteen students re-
ceived Bachelor of Science
in Nursing degrees, while
the rest were granted
Bachelor of Arts degrees.
Northwestern College
is a Christian college of
more than 1,200 students.

grees from Creighton Uni-
versity during the spring
commencement ceremony
Saturday, May 12, in
Omaha, NE.
Kristin Weis of Nor-
walk earned a law degree
and Carin Van Dyke of St.
Charles earned a Bachelor
of Health Science degree
and a doctor of pharmacy
degree.
About 1,500 degrees
were conferred during
Creighton's commence-
ment ceremony at Cen-
turyLink Center Omaha.
University President
Timothy R. Lannon, S.J.,
presided at the ceremony.
Lannon, a 1973 graduate of
the university, is the first
alum to serve as president
at Creighton.
