NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation's only interdiscipli- nary honors organization for first-year and second- year college students. Membership is by invita- tion onl) based on grade point average and class standing. NSCS ha s nearly one million lifetime mem- bers and 300 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. H0fmaier, a 2012 graduate of Norwalk High School, is a student at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. Leslie Soyer of Norwalk was awarded a Master of Science in Nursing degree during Creighton Univer- sity's commencement cer- emony May 18 at the Cen- turyLink Center in Oma- ha. University Presiclent Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., presided. Lannon, a 1973 graduate of the Unlversi- r, is the first alum to serve as president of Creighton. About 1,600 degrees were conferred during Creight- on University's spring commencement. The following local stu- dents graduated from Central Co!lege in Pella Saturday, May 11. The cer- emony was held at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse in Pella. There were 348 graduates from 15 states and one foreign country. Norwalk graduates in- clude Jacqueline Hale, who graduated magna cure laude with a major in linguistics; Benjamin Simpson, Who graduated with a major in physics and Garrett Simpson, who graduated with a major in physics. Also Jordan Wisecup, Truro, graduated with a major in exercise science. Matthew Reisener was named to the Phi Epsilon Honor Society (the top 10% of the graduating class), was named the Out- standing Senior in Political Science, received the De- partment of Communica- tion and Theatre Out- standing Senior Debater Award and received the Department of Communi- cation and Theatre Out- standing Senior Award at the Celebration of Honors held Friday, April 26, on the William Jewell College campus in Liberty, MO. Reisener was a senior communication with an emphasis in rhetoric & political thought and po- litical science major during the spring 2013 semester. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to announce that Kate Korbakes of Norwalk, was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES [ for all academic disci- plines. Korbakes was ini- tiated at Georgia Health Sciences Urffversity in Ba- ton Rouge, LA. Korbakes is among ap- proximately 32,000 stu- dents, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be ini- tiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, hav- ing at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 per- cent of the number of can- didates for graduate de- grees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinc- tion. The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Salem Hildebrandt from Nor- walk has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in Honor Roll. This is a prestigious honor very few students can hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes fewer than 10% of all American high school stu- dents. Hildebrandt, who at- tends Norwalk High School, was nominated for this honor by Maria Fran- turn, a Dean at the school. Hildebrandt will appear in the United States Achieve- ment Academy's Official Yearbook which is pub- lished nationally.
