Garrett julian.garrett@legis.iowa.gov Supreme Court Decisions The U. S. Supreme Court traditionally issues major decisions in June before they adjourn for the summer. This year there a several major cases on which the court is expected to issue decisions in June. One case involves the Trump administration’s effort to ask for citizenship information when the 2020 census is taken. U. S. District Court judges in New York and California have ruled that asking the question on citizenship is unlawful. The Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling this month. There are several pending cases involving drawing new congressional and state legislative districts, that are alleged to be unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has been reluctant to intervene in such cases in the past, ruling that such decisions are political decisions that the courts should not be involved in. The Court is expected to rule on cases from Maryland and North Carolina, where lower federal courts have ruled that the redistricting plans are unconstitutional. While the Supreme Court ruling will have a substantial affect in a number of states, it will not affect Iowa since our legislature has authorized the non—partisan Legislative Services Agency to draw congressional and legislative districts. The legislature can only accept or reject them. New districts will be set in 2021 after the federal census is taken in 2020. Senate Committee Changes . There have been several Iowa Senate committee changes after Senator Randy Feenstra resigned as chair of the Ways and Means Committee to concentrate on his campaign for the 4th district U. S. Congressional seat. This has resulted in! several new committee chairs and I have been promoted to vice chair of the Judiciary Committee. My other committee positions remain the same, including chair of the Justice Systems Budget Subcommittee. As always please feel free to contact me with your ideas or concerns. .
