SCHOOL and SPORTS Official Publication for the Norwalk Community School District [ Norwalk Warriors Page Eight The varsity softball team lost to Newton 5-1 at Newton Friday, June 18. The Warriors got a 1-0 lead in the first inning and were playing well when the game was delayed about an hour due to lightning. The team wasn't the same when the game resumed and gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth in- ning on some defensive miscues. Newton added two more in the sixth. Norwalk scored right away as Abby Hamilton singled and was sacrificed to third by Paige Lammers. She then scored on a Sierra Nelson base hit. The War- riors threatened a few times, but couldn't get the big hit. Devin Brown took the mound and pitched a fine game allowing seven hits with eight strikeouts. Hit- ting for Norwalk were Brown, Nelson and Dani Richardson two each, Hamilton and Ashlee Seibert one each. This left Norwalk at 5-2 in the conference at the halfway point, with four of the next seven conference games at home. The varsity softball team lost to top-ranked Carlisle, 7-0, Tuesday, June 22, at Carlisle. The War- riors played even with the Wildcats as the score was tied 0-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Carlisle scored two runs, but Norwalk came back and loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out, but couldn't get the big hit they needed. Gutknecht gave up nine hits with one strikeout and two hit bat- ters. Four of the runs were earned. Norwalk got solo hits from Brown, Hamilton and Natalie Meuler. The varsity softball team defeated Grinnel110- 1 Wednesday, June 23 at Norwalk. Grinnell's field was too wet to play so the game was moved here with Grinnell the home team. The Warriors jumped on top right away as Brown singled, was sac- rificed to second and moved to third ona passed ball and scored on a Lammers bunt. Norwalk got three more in the second as Natalie Meuler and Dani Richardson singled and Meuler scored on a Tori Mateer bunt. Richardson then scored on an Ashlee Seibert bunt and Brown drove in Mateer. In the third the Warriors got two more runs. Meuler tripled with two outs and scored on a Richardson double. Mateer then doubled home Richardson, In the fourth Norwalk got a solo run as Lammers singled Thursday, July 1, 2010 with two outs and scored on a Sierra Nelson double.
