Before and After
I once had a makeover
complete with before and
after photos. I don't know
which it was harder on,
my self-esteem or my eye-
brows.
The woman in charge
was beautiful, confident
and optimistic. She told
me I have many fine fea-
tures that could be en-
hanced with the proper
use of makeup. We'll call
her Dee for Delusional.
She started by pulling
my hair into a tight pony-
tail. Then she instructed
me to scrub my face until I
had removed every trace
of my old, outdated
makeup. Unfortunately,
my top layer of skin came
with it. I looked like a
plucked chicken with a
sunburn. But the ponytail
did make my eyes appear
much larger.
Then Dee asked me to
put on a plain white shirt
over my clothing. I pro-
tested. White is not a good
color for me, before or af-
ter, though it is nice on
many chickens.
She insisted. Then she
ordered me not to smile
for the Before Photo.' I
don't know if this was to
intensify the difference
between the before and af-
ter shots, or if it was to save
me the pain of stretching
my freshly scrubbed skin.
But there I was, looking
like a mournful, plucked
,chicken with a sunburn
and very large eyes when
she snapped my photo. At
the risk of sounding vain,
I have to say I looked much
better BEFORE my Before
Photo.
Next Dee spent half an
hour preparing me for my
after shot..She replaced my
top layer of skin with a
lovely foundation, which
coincidentally was the
same shade as the skin I
had just scrubbed off. She
painted my lips, my eye-
lids and my cheeks and
then she yanked out my
eyebrows and drew them
back in. While she did this,
she told me that more than
any other facial feature,
our eyebrows express who
we are. I had no idea! And
as capable as Dee seemed
to be, it did not put me at
ease knowing that a
woman I had just met was
messing with" my chief
means of self-expression.
While she worked, Dee
gushed about how natural
the makeup she had se-
lected looked on me. In
fact, she worked very hard
to help me ach, ieve the
natural look, which I had
previously thought one

could have without work-
ing at all. She reassured me
that the natural look is the
one I want--UNLESS it's
natural because I'm not
wearing any makeup.
Natural or not, Dee
pointed out that women
must wear make-up in or-
der to look professional.
Studies show that women
are more likely to get a
well-paying job if they
wear makeup to the job
interview. In other words,
woman should wear
make-up so they can com-
pete in a man's world. This
is, she said, because make-
up makes a woman appear
more confident, though I
suppose not nearly as con-
fident as a man who wears
make-up.
"It isn't fair," she said,
"that men can look good
without wearing cosmet-
ics." I had to disagree. I
know some men who
could benefit from a touch
of face powder in their T-
zone, though foundation
and whiskers might not
mix.
Just when I was grow-
ing weary of the attention,
Dee removed my hair
from the ponytail, asked
me to remove the white
shirt, and told me to smile
for the After Photo. And
voila! I looked profes-
sional and confident,
though not one bit natural.
I don't believe I've ever
again looked as good as I
did in my After Photo. But
then, I don't believe I've
ever again looked as bad as
] did in my Before Photo.
Also, it took a long time for
my eyebrows to grow back
and I've had a hard time
expressing myself ever
since.
