2010 NMS Art Safari
18 Years of Learning
By B.J. Garrison, MS Art Instructor
The 18th annual Norwalk Middle School Art Safari,
a summer school art enrichment class, was held for stu-
dents in June.
The "Art of Seeing" for details, light (color), propor-
tion of zoo creatures habitat, food and shelter are very
important skills in learning about bugs, squennies, spi-
ders, snakes, turtles, butterflies, birds of all sizes, seals,
rhinos, lion, tigers, monkeys, bears, elephants, gorillas,
fish and sea creatures of all shapes and sizes from many
different continents.
We take third through eighth graders on an adven-
ture they will never forget to the Henry Doorly Zoo in
Omaha, NE, where they get extremely dose to live spi-
ders, snakes, sharks, peacocks who cased down side-
ways, baby seals just born, a one-year-old baby gorilla
and a butterfly garden where hundreds of beautiful
butterflies eat fruit all day so they can take flight and
land on you nose.
We learned many life-long skills to help with careers;
being on time, keeping to a very tight schedule, fact find-
ing with the IMAX presentation of Bugs - the prehis-
toric cleaners of earth as well as working and talking
with our groups' members. We were observed while
eating, through huge glass windows where the mon-
keys were resting, making faces at us and playing tag.
They were extremely athletic in their ability to leap, jump
and swing great distances from one vine or branch to
another.
We also learned that light, depth of field, composi-
tion and timing in taking our photos of all these species
at the zoo makes it so much easier to turn our photos
into clay sculptures, paintings, drawings, masks, exotic
penguins, t-shirts and scratch-board art, which we did
While in the Norwalk Middle School Visual Art Room.
All 25 students got an education to last them for a life-
time and had tons of fun doing it first class. They did an
awesome job!
If your third through eighth grader would like to join
us next year, give me a call at home, 981-5037 or during
the school year at 981-0435 and just ask for Mr. Garri-
son. Official sign up will be in May of next year with
the deadline of May 21, 2011.
