Here are some ways to help your child .and your family have a fun and stimulating summer break. Look for educational moments. Many children will resist if you tell them you are planning an educational outing. Instead, look for educational moments during rou- tine outings. On trips to the park, talk about nature. Going to the grocery store? Focus on math or nutrition. Hometown programs. Take advantage of free or inexpensive community-spon- sored programs at recreation areas or other cities. These programs are usually a great blend of learning and fun. They also give children a good opportunity to try new things. Try new sports--together. Sports are a great way for families to bond and get in shape. Look for opportunities for the whole family--from beach volleyball to cro- quet, lacrosse to a neighborhood 10 kilometer run/walk. Grab those board games. Some days it's just too hot for active play outside. Make sure you have board games and puzzles on hand. These activities teach math, motor and social skills. Limit amount of time spent playing video or computer games. Plan a trip. Incorporate learning into your summer vacation. Before you go on a trip, spend some time as a family learning about your destination. If possible, look for parks, museums and interesting sites that might make good places to stop. Con- sider local attractions you have never visited. Children learn so much when they experience things, rather than just reading about them. Sneak in some science. All you really need to get your children interested in science is to let them experience the world around them. Look in the paper for when meteor showers occur(usually in August). Point out flowers, trees, butterflies, bugs, leaves and clouds. Consider checking out a book of kitchen science experiments from the library. Read.Reading should be a part of every child's daily routine. Set aside time both for family members to read alone and for the kids to read to you. Joining a library summer program or book club keeps children motivated and working toward a goal. Listen and follow-up. Many children develop new interests over the summer, usually because they're around friends or relatives who have interesting hobbies. If your child mentions he or she would like to try something new, find out about it together. Don't overdo it. Children need time to relax. Try to leave plenty of free time so your children can jump through the sprinkler, watch the clouds drift by, or just play with their friends. Finall); the most valuable learning tool is you. Whether you work full-time, part- time, or as a full-time parent, try to spend as much time with your children as pos- sible. You'll both learn a lot. Bake Some Family Fun With These Charming Treats (NAPS)--Y0u and your family can have fun indoors by creating these tasty and charming treats. Kid-friendly Sugar Cookies on a Stick and unique Homemade Marsh- mallow recipes are totally cus- tomizable and perfect winter treats; each can be made to include your family's favorite flavors, shapes or colors. The secret to making these tasty sweets is to use Karo Syrup. In cookies, it helps maintain freshness, and in marshmallows, it helps con- trol sugar crystallization, which keeps them smooth and creamy. Sugar Cookies on a Stick Prep time: 20 minutes Bake time: 8 to 10 minutes Chill time: 1 hour OR overnight Ireld: 20 cookies " 1 cups sugar 1 cup shortening- 2eggs 1A cup Karo Light Corn Syrup 1 ]us vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teasl0n Argo Baking Powder teaspoon salt Craft sticks Combine sugar and shortening in a large bowl. Beat at medium speed with electric mix- ture until well mixed. Add eggs,.corn syrup and va- nilla. Beat until well blended and fluffy. Gradu- ally add flour, baking pow- der and salt to creamed mixture at low speed. Mix until well blended. Wrap dough in plastic wrap. Chln  at least 1hour before using. Keep refrig- erated until ready to use. Preheat oven to 375 F. Kid-friendly cookies on a stick are almost as easy to make as they are fun to eat. Cover baking sheet with parchment paper. Shape dough into walnut-size balls. Push craft sticks into the center of each ball Place  with stick parallel to the baking sheet, 3 inches apart. Flatten cookies into - inch circles. Bake cookies for 8 to 10 minutes, or until slightly browned around the edges. Don't overbake. Let cool on bak- ing sheet for 5 minutes before placing on wire rack to cool completely. When cookies are cool, wrap in plastic wrap and tie with a ribbon OR place in airtight container. Homemade Marshnmllows Prep time: 45 minutes Cool time: 4+ hours Yield: 6 dozen medium marshmallows 1 cup room temperature water, divided / teaspoon salt 3 envelopes unflavored gelatin 2cups sugar 1 cup Karo Light Corn Syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoons Argo Corn Starch Combine cup water, salt and gelatin in large bowt of a stand mixer. Stir Homemade marshmallows can add extra warmth to a cup of hot chocolate. and set aside. Combine remaining cup water, sugar and corn syrup in a large saucepan over medi- um heat. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Using a candy thermometer, cook until mixture reaches 240 F or soft ball stage. Gradually pour the hot syrup over the gelatin mix- ture with the mixer on low. Turn the mixer on its high- est speed and beat for 8 minutes. Add vanilla and beat an additional 2 min- utes. The miag bowl will get very full. The marsh- mallows will become very thick, white and shiny. Spread mixture onto greased baking sheet with sides. For thicker marsh- mallows, use a 13 x 9-inch pan. Let marshmallows cool at least 4 hours or overnight. Combine pow- dered sugar and corn starch in a shallow pan. Cut the ws into bite-size pieces with a sharp knife or scissors, dropping one at a time inte the powdered sugar. Toss to coat welL Store marsh- mallows in an airtight con- tainer in a cool place.
