Economy Continues to Grow
The national economy continues to
grow. According to the U. S. Labor
Department, there was a net increase
of 224,000 new jobs nationally in June
of 2019. The unemployment rate is
3.7%. The labor participation rate is
62.9% of the working age pop-
ulation.Average hourly wages have
increased by 3.1% over the last year.
You may have read or heard that
unemployment for blacks, Hispanics
and women is at record lows recently. I
see that the Dow Jones Industrial
Average has exceeded 27,000 for the
first time.
Isn’t it amazing that so many
Democrats are trying to convince us
that conditions in the USA are awful,
in spite of the great economic news. It
should be very significant to all of us,
that most of the rest of the wOrld would
give anything to trade places with the
complainers. '
Supreme Court Upholds
Conviction After Traffic Stop
The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled
that a woman who was stopped for a
burned out license light, and erratic
driving a car that was owned by a person,
who turned out not to be the driver, with
connections with gang activity, could be
prosecuted for violations of law that the
officer was not aware of until he stopped
‘her. In the case, State v. Scottize
Danyelle Brown, the officer, after
stopping the driver, observed an open
beer can in the car and found she was
driving with an expired license. She was
charged with second offense driving
while intoxicated, after a sobriety test.
The defendant moved to suppress
evidence that the officer was not aware
of when he stopped her, claiming that
the use of that evidence was a Violation
of the constitution’s prohibition against
unreasonable search and seizure. The
ACLU and NAACP joined the case on
behalf of the defendant, claiming this
was a case of racial profiling, and
agreeing that evidence discovered after
the stop should not be admissible
against the defendant.
The 4 justices who made up the
majority, ruled that as long as the
original reason for the stop was
reasonable, evidence discovered after
the stop could be used to prosecute the
defendant. The other 3 justices
dissented, arguing that the evidence
discovered after the stop should have
been suppressed.
