SalesTax Holiday
The annual sales tax holiday is scheduled for Friday,
Aug. 1, at 12:01 a.m. through midnight, Saturday, Aug.
2. During this time there is no sales tax charged on back
to school items such as clothes and footwear. The De-
partment of Revenue estimates that Iowans save about
$4.4 million annually during this time. The exemption
only applies to items that sell for $100 or less. There are
rules to avoid cheating. For example, a pair of shoes
that sells for more than $100 cannot be split up to sell
two shoes for less than $100 each, in order to get the
exemption. The Department of Revenue has more de-
tails on its website.
Illegals in Iowa?
I was pleased to see that Governor Branstad has stated
that he does not want young people crossing the south-
"ern border illegally, to be brought to Iowa. Though we
all sympathize with individual young people who live
in third world countries, knowing the difficulties that
they face, I believe most people agree that we cannot
have an open border allowing anyone from anywhere
in the world to come to this country. Also, how can we
tell if those coming across the border are victims or per-
petrators? The easier we make it for people, young or
old, to cross the border illegally, the more we encour-
age others to do so. I see that a number of liberals are
working to bring young people who have illegally
crossed the border to Iowa. They obviously do not care
about the burden .that places on the taxpayers.
