from September 4th through the 6th of Labor Day weekend. This is a special year for re-enactors as the nation celebrates the Sesqui- centennial ending of the Civil War - or 150 years since southern armies surrendered. CWD begins with a School Day Program on Septem- ber 4th for students and teachers, a day dedicated ex- clusively to students of all ages - public, private, home school, college- throughout the region. A street-to-street battle in downtown Lamoni on Saturday highlights the beginning of the re-enactment. Afterward the event moves one mile west of town to a 38 acre pasture with large battles at 2 p.m. Saturday and at I p.m. Sunday. Check www.civilwardays.org for the detailed sched- ule of weekend events. Civil War Days is open and free to the public. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION CERTIFIES DMACC PROGRAM The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Court Reporting Program has been offidally certified by the National Court Reporters Assodation (NCRA). "This certification shows we have met a unique set of standards set by the NCRA that will help our stu- dents succeed in the workforce," says Patricia Ziegler, the DMACC Court Reporting Department Chair. According to Ziegler, the certification exposes the students to more rigorous testing that demands both speed and accuracy. "DMACC's Court Reporting Program is an all-en- compassing curriculum that prepares students for state and national certification," she says. The DMACC Newton Campus is the only institution in Iowa to offer a Real Time/Court Reporting degree and is one of 40 programs nationwide certified by the National Court Reporters Association. "Both our day and online programs earned certified status by meeting rigorous standards," says the DMACC Newton Campus Provost, Dr. Mary Entz. The Court Reporting Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree is a full-time two-year program that as- signs each student a mentor, who provides support and additional expertise on how to succeed in the program. The students are also provided with networking oppor- tunities and real-world experiences. "Jobs are waiting for our graduates. Over 5,500 job openings are projected to be available, nationwide, within the next five years," says Ziegler. "Starting sala- ries are in the $40,000+ range." A Court Reporting Program information session will be held Monday, September 14. For more information or to register for the information session, contact Nicole Kalkwarf at nlkalkwarf@dmacc.edu.
