I Legislative News By State Representative Julian B. Garrett Online Education Jobs The education bill that we passed during the 2013 session requires the Department of Education to post education jobs online. The idea is to have a one-stop place making it easier to find education related jobs in Iowa. Entities covered are school districts, charter schools, AEAs, the DE and accredited nonpublic schools. Public institutions are required to post openings on the site. Posting is optional for nonpublic entities. Employ- ers are also free to advertise outside this system if they want to do so. The website is now up and running. It is www.teachiowa.gov. Elder Abuse Prevention and Intervention Study Committee I have been appointed by the House Speaker to co- chair, with a member of the Senate, the Elder Abuse Prevention and Intervention Study Committee. The study committee shall review the task force progress report and approve the final report of the task force and shall submit the committee's rec- ommendations and a final report to the General Assem- bly following completion of the committee's work." Marijuana Bust During a stop for a traffic violation the state trooper smelled marijuana. Upon questioning the driver admit- ted to marijuana possession. A search of the vehicle turned up more than 50 pounds of marijuana. Three young men in the vehicle were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. It is believed that they were transporting the drug from Cali- fornia to Massachusetts. Marijuana is the most com- monly used illegal drug. Apparently, some still believe that it is harmless. According to the Governor's Office of Drug Control Polic marijuana use lowers IQ's in young people and negatively affects motivation, memory and learning. Marijuana continues to be a substantial problem in Iowa. So far in fiscal year '13, more than 5,813 plants have been seized. That is the most seized in the past 4 years and experts expect that number to climb. SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
