Iowa became the first state afternoon with Group and Vernon Ewell Meets Vernon Ewell Recently Vernon A. EwelL "Bud", a 30-year resident of Norwalk, participated in a lengthy telephone con- versation with Vernon E. Ewell "Vern" of Cresson, TX. As it turns out the two men, who are not related, both have ties to Norwalk, Iowa. Vernon E. Ewell attended Norwalk High School, graduating in 1957. At that time, his family lived on a small farm near Fleur Drive and County Line Road, just two miles east of what is now the Lakewood neighborhood. The "Bud" Ewell family have lived in Lakewood for 30 years. The only two common threads is the fact that the men share the same name, a name that is unusual for this part of the country, and that 50 years later, the men found out they each had Norwalk ties with their homes just a couple of miles apart. The telephone conversation was set up by long-time Norwalk resident, Jim Becket, who went to school with Vernon E. Ewell.
