OBITUARY
LAWRENCE "LARRY" SMITH
Services were held
Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the
Norwalk Christian Church
for Lawrence "Larry"
Smith, 84, who died
Thursday, Aug. 13, at his
home in Norwalk with his
wife, Nonnie, at his side.
A graveside and Masonic
service was held at the
Norwalk Cemetery.
Lawrence Edward
"Larry" Smith, the son of
Frank Edward and Alto
Marie (Olson) Smith, was
born November 9, 1930 in
Dexter. At an early age his
family moved to Norwalk
where Larry attended
school graduating from
Norwalk High School with
the Class of 1948, where he
was President and
Valedictorian. Following
school, he married
Geraldine Caldwell. They
had two children, Becky
and Alan, and lived in
Nevada.
Larry worked for
Hunter Motor Company in
Earlham for many years.
He then worked as an
electronics engineer for the
Des Moines Community
School District and for
KDPS Radio at Des Moines
Tech. He owned two farms
and enjoyed growing
crops and raising
livestock. When he was
younger, Larry enjoyed
Ham Radio. He liked to
fish, hunt, travel and
spend winters at their
home in Arizona. He was
well known for his sense
of humor and quick wit.
Larry met his future
wife, Nonnie Wilkins
Shehane of Lebanon, TN at
a National Square Dance
Convention in Chicago, IL.
They were married June 10,
1978 in Lebanon and
enjoyed 37 loving years
together. Larry and
Nonnie are long-time
members of Norwalk
Christian Church. Larry
was a member of the
Welfare Masonic Lodge
#628 in Norwalk, where he
was a 5th Degree Mason
and had just received his
50-year pin.
Services Friday, Aug. 28, for
Karla Kay Handy
Memorial services will
be held at 1 p.m. Friday,
Aug. 28, at St. Paul
Lutheran Church in
Martensdale for Karla Kay
Handy, 72, Indianola, who
died approximately 9:30
a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12,
in a tragic car accident
south of Indianola in rural
Warren County. Following
services there will be a light
luncheon. Iowa Cremation
is assisting the family.
Karla was born July 31,
1943 to Charles Holzworth
and Elsie Hummel. She
was one of seven children
born to Charles and Elsie.
August 24, 1962, Karla
married Sanford Dwane
Handy and five children,
David, Kris, Kim, Charles
and Daniel, were born to
them.
For seven years, Karla
was a cook/restaurant
owner of Triple K Cafe
located in Norwalk.
Following the closing of
the restaurant she was a
homemaker. Karla loved
being around her family
and friends and helping
others any way that she
could She loved having a
full house and over the
years she and Dwane
opened their home to many

Martensdale, Kimberly

Kellerton, Charles Handy
of Indianola, and Daniel

grandchildren; three
sisters, Cheryl (Jeff)
Hannon, Rhonda Wagner
and Jane (Jay) Cody, all of
Omaha, NE and her best
friend of many years Dub
(Tom) Bouma of Norwalk.
She was preceded in
death by her loving
husband, Dwane, her
parents Charles and Elsie
Holzworth, her brothers,
Jack Holzworth and
Richard Holzworth, a
sister, Patricia Hersh and
two grandsons, D.R.
Handy-Long and Eric
Melvin Fuller.

death by his parents; sister,

Richard Dean Pickel, 60,
of Des Moines, passed
away peacefully August
16, 2015, at the Kavanagh
Hospice House in Des
Moines, IA.
The family has chosen
to have a private service.
Burial of Richard's
cremated remains will take
place in the Morgan
Cemetery in Schleswig,
Iowa, at a later date.
