Photo submitted. Jennie Kern Earns Girl Scout Gold Award Jennie Kern, member of Girl Scout Troop 130 in Norwalk, has completed the requirements and earned her Gold Award for her project entitled, "Sowing Threads to Shelter the Homeless." As a part of her project, Jennie organized a clothing drive at West Des Moines United Methodist Church (WDMUMC). In addition to clothing collected there, she received donations from members of collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames, family and friends. A total of 1491 items were collected, sorted and delivered to the Hope Ministries' ENCORE Thrift Store on Army Post Road in Des Moines. Jennie worked with Terri Simmons, Resource Development Coordinator at Hope Ministries, who says that clothing is always a huge need in the homeless population. Jennie used troop proceeds from Cookie and Fall Product sales to purchase 186 pairs of new socks and 81 pairs of new underwear for the men at Hope Ministries" Bethel Mission in Des Moines. The youth group at WDMUMC will continue her project by conducting another clothing drive for the homeless next year. The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouts, requiring a minimum of 80 hours in identifying and addressing a community need in a sustainable manner. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts earn this distinction nationwide. Jennie has been active in Girl Scouts in Norwalk for 13 years, beginning as a Daisy Scout in Kindergarten. Highlights of her years as a Girl Scout include traveling with her troop to Chicago by train and to Savannah, GA, to visit the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts. Jennie graduated with honors from Norwalk High School in May and is attending Central College in Pella this fall. She is the daughter of Ben and Carolyn Kern of Norwalk.
