t Thursday, August 27, 2015 N/Warren Town and County News Page Seven Senate News By State Senator Julian B. Garrett Julian.Garrett@legis.iowa.gov. Illegal Immigration Illegal immigration has become one of the leading issues in the presidential race. I have tried, without a lot of success, to bring this issue up in the Iowa legislature in recent years. I have introduced bills for several years to make the E-Verify program manda- tory in Iowa. E-verify is a federal program that al- lows employers to check to be sure people that they are hiring are in the coun- try legally and can be le- The problem is that the program voluntary. While many employers use the program, many do not. We know that many employ- ers do hire people in the country illegally, even though by doing so, they are violating federal law. Of course they pay people here illegally a lower wage than they would have to pay to those legally in the country whether native Americans or legal immi- grants. This gives them a competitive advantage gally hired. The employer over employers that obey inputs information such as name, address, date of birth, social security num- ber that he or she is collect- ing anyway for social se- curity purposes and tax the law. As we know the immi- gration law is at best half- heartedly enforced by the current administration, and some parts are openly to those Americans look- ing for work, and to busi- nesses that comply with the law and only hire those legally in the country. I am pleased to see that several of the presidential candi- dates are advocating mak- ing E-Verify mandator as well as advocating other remedies to combat illegal immigration. I support se- curing the border, but I also believe if the E-Verify program is mandatory and enforced, that will go a long way towards solving our immigration program in a relatively simple and economic way. Among the magnets drawing illegal immigrants is the prospect of a job in the U.S., as well as the various other ben- withholding. In a few sec- ignored.
