"It has, for the most part, been an enjoyable career," • Ed said. Ed has also spent a number of years as one of the two ,mentoring Chiefs for the State of Iowa. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) recruited him to help new Police Chiefs in Iowa to learn the ropes. Forbes Magazine selected Norwalk as the best sub- urb in Iowa, partly for the high quality schools and partly for the low crime rate. He is very proud of the officers who have maintained a low rate of crimes and a high rate of solutions. Ed is proud of the officers he selected. "Finding the personality that fits our community is the toughest part; you can train them, but the cornmori sense and the right personality must be there. Assistant Chief Kirk Westvold has done a terrific job with our transi- tion to new technologies and Westcom. The civilian staff has always received high marks each year when the state audits their work. Our community is served by an ex- cellent police department." Ed also had a 28-year military career, serving in the National Guard and Army Reserves. He entered service as a private and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of training senior level Army leaders for the Command and General Staff College in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. "I got to command two armored cavalry units, serve on various staff positions, instruct and later supervise instructors. I always felt that command was a sacred trust for the lives of the sons, daughters, moms and dads that one commands. It really hit home when I saw our own children standing in similar formations." Edserves as the Stewardship Chair for the New Life Lutheran Church in Norwalk, the chair of the Norwalk Ministerial Association&apos;s golf committee and Diane serves as the chair of the committee for the community dinner. Both of these events raise proceeds for the com- munity food pantry. Ed is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Iowa Police Chiefs, Army Officers Association, Boy Scouts of America and the Masonic Lodge of Herman, Nebraska. Ed has served as the Commissioner for the Be Qui Scouting District and founded the Norwalk Public Safety Explorers Post• He has served on the Board of Directors and is a Past Presi- dent of the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce. "There are so many good friends there and cutting those "ribbons, encouraging and welcoming new businesses that invest in our community has been the very best part." Ed and Diane have three adult children and nine grandchildren. "We look forward to traveling and work- ing on our hobbies. Anyone who has seen my golf game knows it will take a lot of time to improve it. We still want to be involved in the life of this community and at some point would enjoy serving again in another ca- pacity. We now have family and friends here and Norwalk is our home.
