Legislative News
By State Representative Julian B. Garrett
Interim Committees
Many people do not realize that some legislative work
goes on over the summer after the session is adjourned.
One of the duties that we have is to serve on what we
call interim committees. These are committees that meet
after the session to study a certain subject and perhaps
make recommendations for legislation to be considered
in the 2014 session. I am the co-chair on the House side
for the Elder Abuse Prevention and Intervention Study
Committee. There is also a Senate Democrat co-chair.
Our committee will examine the issue of elder abuse
prevention and intervention and perhaps make recom-
mendations for the session next January. Each interim
committee is co-chaired by a House Republican and a
Senate Democrat. In addition to the interim committee
described above, I also serve as the Iowa House Repub-
lican representative on the Child Support Advisory
Committee and the Human Rights Board, that meet at
times when we may or may not be in session.
I thought you might be interested in the other interim
committees that will be meeting. Without going into
detail on their duties they are: Integrated Health Care
Models and Multi-payer Delivery Systems Study Com-
mittee; Mental Health and Disability Services Redesign
Fiscal Viability Study Committee; Medical Malpractice
Study Committee; All-terrain and Off-road Utility Ve-
hicle Study Committee; Iowa Rivers and Waterways
Study Committee; Administrative Costs in Higher Edu-
cation Study Committee; Iowa Skilled Worker and Job
Creation Fund Study Committee; Emergency Medical
Services Study Committee; Stray Electric Current and
Agriculture Study Committee,
