NORWALK POLICE CHIEF ]
By Ed Kuhl
Our office will be requesting the Iowa Department
of Transportation to conduct a traffic study for the area
of Sunset Drive (Highway 28) between the area from
Gordon Street north to our city limits. We will be ask-
ing them to consider the speed zones in the area as well
as the use of median barriers on the curve just north of
Columbine Drive. The current speed zones were estab-
lished more than ten years ago. We will ask that the
study consider the changes to the traffic flow and the
development of the area that have occurred during that
time frame.
From July 15 to the 22nd, our speed trailer recorded
21,706 northbound vehicles in the area of Legacy Park-
way on Highway 28.10,314 vehicles were traveling be-
low 45 miles per hour, 11,706 were traveling between
46 and 55 miles per hour and 758 we[e traveling over 56
miles per hour. During the last 12 months there were 32
traffic accidents on that portion of Highway 28, result-
ing in about $127,000 in property damage, eight inju-
ries and one fatality. Officers have also written 307 cita-
tions for that area during the last 12 months. There have
also been four instances known to us when southbound
vehicles have crossed the median on the curve north of

Our Public Safety Explorers Post met Tuesday
evening, September 14, and learned how police officers
conduct traffic stops. The Explorers will now conduct
simulated traffic stops and practice those skills. The
Norwalk Fire Advisors invited the Cadets to attend their
training with the Jaws of Life Wednegday evening, Sept.
15. The Post grew by 11 more members and one adult
advisor. The next outing is planned for September 28 at
6:30 p.m. The group will meet at the Norwalk Public
Safety Building and tour the Polk County Jail. If you
know of a young person (male or female) ages 14
through 20 that may be interested in this Post please let
them know. The cost is $10 to join through the Boy Scouts
of America Explorers Program. The Cumming Ameri-
can Legion Post 562 is the Charter Organization. Don't
miss out; come with us and explore the adventures of
Public Safety.
Thank you again for your support.
