Road Construction We have seen a number of road construction projects in our area this year. Iowans can check the status of con- struction projects at www.iowadot.gov/travel.html#/ highwayconstruction. That is the official site but I was able to find the information by searching "Iowa DOT Construction" also. In addition, there are documents available at the DOT site, such as accident report forms, applications for registration, or applications for a dis- abled parking permit and other information. Property Tax ReIief Iowans have now received their property tax state- ments. This year we are beginning to see the results of the property tax bill passed in 2013 with bipartisan sup- port. The Department of Revenue reports that Iowa Counties have received over $78.3 million in state "back- fill" funding to compensate them for lost property tax revenue. Individual taxpayers are receiving over $49 million in tax credits. In our area, Warren County re- ceived $560,778.12 in backfill dollars and residents re- ceived $507,555.39 in income tax credits for a total of $1,068,333.51. Madison County received $181,465.43 in backfill dollars and residents received $277,253.43 in income tax credits, for a total of $458,719.08. Commer- cial and industrial property is taxed at 95% of value this year and will be taxed at 90% of value next year. Though the exact amount varies, ag. and residential property have been taxed at roughly 50% of value for years. Pheasant Numbers Up The Iowa DNR reports that pheasant numbers are up in Iowa reversing declines in recent years. The DNR re- ports that recent counts show 17.4 birds per 30-mile driving routes compared to seven in the last three years. In 2003 the count was nearly 50 per 30 miles. The DNR travels about 210 routes each year to get a count on the pheasant population. Obviously, greater numbers will result in more economic activity by both resident and non-resident hunters.
