LEISURE DAY AT ANNETT NATURE CENTER
Friday, Sept. 24, sixth grade middle school students
went to Annett Nature Center for the annual Leisure
Day interdisciplinary experience. The students had six
different opportunities to explore creative ways to use
their 1.eisure time. These activities included canoeing,
fishing, nature walk, .crafts, art and orienteering. There
was also an optional activity of horseback riding for
those students that wished to go. During lunch time,
former student James Biehn entertained the students
with live music at a picnic-style lunch. Here are some
of the reflections from the students:
• My favorite thing was canoeing because it was fun
and challenging. I was partnered with Jocelyn Perry. We
listened to all the directions and tried not to tip it be-
cause that would be a disaster! I heard there were water
snakes in that pond too! I have only been canoeing a
few times so I don't get to do it a lot. i love canoeing
because I have to work hard and you get a 10t of experi-
ence. Jocelyn and I stayed close to land so we didn't
drift away. There was a bit of a breeze!
-Sara Bennett
The canoeing was very fun. It made me feel free. It
meant so much to me because it was a very fun field
trip and I've never canoed before. I liked the boat rock-
ing and the water swirling. I really felt like tipping it
but then I wouldn't be able to do the rest of the trip.
That was the best experience of outdoors I've done in a
long time.
-Michael Legan
My favorite activity at Leisure Day was...I really like
the horseback riding, because you got to ride a really
nice horse named Greeny. Also I got to lead all of the
other horses. I had A LOT of FUN! Finally I ha d a lot of
fun at Leisure Day. We got to do a lot of activities.

My'favorite activity from Leisure day on September
24, 2010 was canoeing. I really enjoyed canoeing. That
is the first time I have been canoeing. I am going to teach
my family how to canoe. I actually love canoeing. That
might become my new hobby. I think m.y family will
love canoeing. That was my favorite activity from Lei-
sure Day.

I am going to choose the canoeing. It was very fun. I
like when we .had to paddle out and then try to maneu-
ver our way around the shore. It was also fun when we
had to turn around and head back to shore.
-Dylan Lane
I like when we we. nt on a hike then we had to use our
5 senses. I like how We had to find our way back! It was
fun I would like to do it again.
-Hannah Andre
I liked canoeing because it took team work. You also
had to get out of bad situations. You had to have some
strength to paddle. It was hard to just keep paddling
and not stopping.
-Kyle McGuire
I loved canoeing at Annett Nature Center. The feel-
ing of being out on the water is like jumping on a tram-
poline, it's like nothing else matters in life. Nothing, you
leave all your problems on the shore, and just float. You
stop trying to fight the current in life and just float. In
life, choosing the right path is key, but on the water, it
seems no matter how many wrong turns you made there
-is always a detour there somewhere.
-Noah Krichau
On the craft time during Leisure Day, I chose to make
the bracelet/necklace. I liked doing it because I love to
create stuff. I also liked the process. My sister used to
make bracelets/necklaces like that a lot when I was
younger and I always wanted to learn. Now I can make
her bracelets!!
-Mya McAlpin
When I was fishing I had some troubles putting on
the hook and the worm. Once I had help getting it on, I
was off to fish. My first time I reeled it in, I felt some-
thing bite. So I reeled it in and there was a fish on the
end! Mr. Heltman told me to go over where he was to
show him how big it was. He told me nice job, then I
got my pictures taken by Ms. Jass. Then, the school put
my picture on the Leisure Day video.
