OBITUARY
SOMMOR N. DALES
Sommor "Munchkin"
Dales, 29, passed away with
her loving family by her
side Sunda34 Oct. 25, at Iowa
Methodist Hospital in Des
Moines. Sommor Nicole
was born on January 2,1986,
the daughter of Laura, sis-
ter of Seth and step-daugh-
ter of Fred.
Celebration of Life Ser-
vices were Thursda3 Oct.
29, at the First Assembly of
God Church in Indianola.
Burial was at the Norwalk
Cemetery, Norwalk. The
family requests donations
be made in memory of
Sommor to Genesis Devel-
opment in Indianola.i
Sommor lived inan as-
sisted living house with
four wonderful friends
through the assistance of the
Genesis Development staff.
Sommor enjoyed swim-
ming, flying kites, telling
jokes. She enjoyed spending
time with her brother, beat-
ing him at basketball,
watching football and lis-
tening to sports. She loved
going to gas stations to get
her buy-one-get-one free
soda and enjoyed making
homemade ice cream. She
loved spending each
Wednesday and Friday
working with her close
friends in the laundry facil-
ity. She enjoyed going on
trips, especially to family
reunions and with the Gen-
esis program going to many
different places including
the Iowa State Fair and
Sommor N. Dales
many concerts. Sommor
was actively involved in the
First Assembly of God
Church where she loved
singing and dancing and was
loved by all who attended.
Sommor is survived by
her mother, Laura; brother,
Seth; step-father, Fred
Elsinga; grandparents,
Lloyd and Betty Dales of
Indianola; two undes, Ron
(Vicki) Dales of Milo and
Doug (Jacque) Dales of
Bellevue, NE; one aunt,
Kimberly (Jim) Oliver of
Austin, PA; cousins,
Allison, Joshua, Ben,
Dustin, Charmayne, Travis,
Anthony, Kathleen, and
Cooper; along with other
family and friends.
Sommor is preceded in
death by great-grandpar-
ents, aunts, uncles and cous-
ins.

OBITUARY
WALTER EDWARD GEARINO
Walter Edward Geari-
no; 71, Norwalk, a big-
hearted man who lived for
serving others, died Mon-
day, Oct. 26, at the Iowa
Veterans Home in Mar-
shalltown, following a
long illness. He was born
June 21, 1944, inNew York
City, to Louis and Marie
Henry Gearino, and was
the eldest of their two chil-
dren.
Mr. Gearino was raised
in Plainfield, NJ, and at-
tended St. Mary's schools
in Plainfield, and also
Plainfield High School. He
joined the Marine Corps
when he was 17 and his
service included time in
Cuba and two tours in
Vietnam. In 1966, he en-
rolled at the University of
South Dakota where he
earned bachelor's and
master's degree in Sociol-
ogy. He also studied at
Birkbeck College, Univer-
sity of London in England.
Hisfirst job after college
was teaching Sociology at
Southeastern Community
College in Burlington, and
also was a faculty adviser
to the school's returning
Vietnam veterans, advo-
cating for greater federal
benefits through fundrais-
ing and legislative involve-
ment. He went on to a ca-
reer with the U.S. Depart-
ment of Veterans Affairs,
first in Cedar Rapids and
then Des Moines. He spent
his career working on the
education and medical
care of veterans. After re-
tiring from his federal
work, he worked with the
Polk County, veteran af-
fairs office, and did a de-
livery route for Meals on
Wheels. Walt was in-
volved with Cub and Boy
Scouts. He loved the out-
doors, including biking

and yearly canoe trips on
the Mississippi.
He is survived by his
wife of 46 years Maureen
(Taylor) Gearino; his three
sons and their families,
Dan Gearino and Samara
Rafert, and their daughters
Eliza and Norah, of Co-
lumbus, OH; Jon Gearino,
of Des Moines, •and Adam
Gearino and Seth Schinde-
hette, of Chicago, IL; his
sister, Irene Liebeck,• of
Princeton, NJ; and he was
a beloved brother-in-law
and uncle to Maureen's
family.
He was preceded in
death by his parents Louis
and Marie; his father and
mother-in-law, Jerome and
Lucille Taylor; older half-
brothers, George, Louis
and Richard; brothers-in-
law, Larry Stroofman, John
Taylor and John Liebeck;
and three nieces, Lucy
Kate Johnson, Catherine
Taylor and Christine Tay-
lor.
A Funeral Mass was
Saturday, Oct. 31, at St.
John the Apostle Catholic
Church in Norwalk. To
