Saturday, Oct. 26, Tom McLaughlin received a lifetime service award and was inducted into the Na- tional Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. His name will go on a plaque at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK and the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo. McLaughlin saw and wrestled in his first wres- tling match at the age of 19 in college. Four years later he started the wrestling program at Norwalk and was head coach from 1967- 1980. During that time his teams had a dual meet record of 114 wins and28 losses. His state tournament teams fin- ished 4th in 1971, 7th in 1972 and 4th in 1974. He was district coach of the year in 1972, 1980 and dis- trict assistant coach of the year in 2007. After retiring, Mc- Laughlin continued assist- ing with the Norwalk Wrestling Program in var- ious capacities ranging from volunteer coach to full-time assistant. Due to McLaughlin's commit- ment to the Norwalk Wres- fling Program, there is an award in his name given each year to the wrestler who displays "Persever- ance through life's strug- gles with a championship attitude." McLaughlin has been employed by the Norwalk Schools for 47 years as a teacher, coach, elementary principal Special Educa- tion Director and present- ly Grounds Director. He is married to wife Stephanie and has four children- Monica, Shannon, Luke and Madison. The earliest stopwatches were known as pulse watches. Made in the 1680s, they were used by doctors.
