U.S. Supreme Court they are dealing with. The
Likely to Hear Appeals
on Obamacare
The U.S. Supreme
Court is expected to an-
challenging the constitu-
tionality of the new federal
health care law to hear.
The Court may have an-
nounced its decision by
the time you read this. It
takes the votes of at least
four justices to bring a case
before the Court on ap-
peal. As you probably
know, a particularly con-
troversial issue is whether
the federal government
can require everyone to
purchase health insurance.
Different circuit courts
have ruled differently on
the constitutionality of the
law so I would expect the
Supreme Court to hear the
appeals and to settle the
issues. An appeal can take
some time, however.
Meeting with State
Troopers
I had a nice visit with
several of the Iowa State
Troopers headquartered in
Osceola last week. We dis-
cussed several issues that
RF,,PA!R
FCC is narrowing the band
width that they can use
with their radios. They tell
me that this reduces the
coverage area 0[ their
present radios. They are in
the process of upgrading
their radios to increase
their coverage area under
the new FCC rules. This is
an ongoing process and
will require appropria-
tions over the next two or
three years.
They pointed out to me
that they use about 1 mil-
lion gallons of fuel per
year statewide, no matter
what the price is. When
fuel prices go up they have
less money to use for other
purposes. The Justice Sys-
tems Appropriations Sub-
committee, of which I am
vice chairman, handles the
appropriations for the
highway patrol, as well as
other parts of the justice
system. We will do our
best to meet the needs of
the patrol and other parts
of the justice system, keep-
ing in mind that we will
not spend more than we
receive in revenue. A bal-
anced budget will again be
a priority. I know the
troopers understand that.
