6th Grade Students Experience the Yukon Gold Rush
The 6th grade students spent the month of October learning about the Yukon Gold Rush. Students read "Call of the Wild" in their English/Language Arts classes and in
Social Studies, they created a personal diary depicting a character experiencing the Yukon gold Rush of 1897 or writing a letter to someone that was going to the Yukon. A
small replica of Dawson City also made by the social studies students. As a culminating day, students dressed as their character in their diaries. They were able to try
beans and ham and sourdough bread in social studies. Mrs. Downs made the beans and ham during the week so the students could see the process of cooking them every
step of the way and she also made sourdough starter so they could understand how it was made. In math, the students Weighed and measured their gold nuggets and did
an activity with the information. Those students who had Health were able to make bandages and learn to splint using wood pieces and cloth. During Science, the students
were able to experience sawing with a two-man saw and finally, in P.E., the students learned how to use a compass and refine their orienteering skills.
