Unemployment Continues Downward Iowa Workforce Development has released the Oc- tober unemployment figures. Iowa's October unemploy- ment rate is 4.6%. That is the sixth lowest in the country. In October 2012 the unemployment rate was 5.1% in Iowa. The national unemployment rate is 7.3%. In Oc- tober 2013 Iowa's labor force stood at 1.66 million. The number employed in October 2012 was 1.63 million people. Commercial Property Tax I am seeing reports that businesses are slow to apply for the property tax credits that they are eligible for uder the property tax reform bill that we passed early this year. To receive the credit a business must file the proper form with the county or city assessor where the property is located. The process is similar to the way homeowners apply for the homestead credit. In the first year, a business may be eligible for as much as $523, but the amount is expected to increase to nearly $2,000 as time goes by. Forms can be obtained at the county or city assessor's office or online at http://www.iowa.gov/ tax/locgov/54-024.pdf. The deadline for filing the ap- plication is January 15, 2014 for the next tax year. As always, feel free to contact me with your ideas or concerns.
