L Thursday, December 9, 2010 N/Warren Town and County News Page Five I CHURCH St. John the Apostle Catholic Church Celebrates 5 th Year in New Location St. John's new marquee sign on the east side of the building. Staffphota by Arlene Knust. In 1892, a new Catholic church was built in Cumming, Iowa. More than a century later, in 2005, the heirs of that origi- nal congregation built a new home in Norwalk. Friday, Dec. 10, the new St. John the Apostle Catholic Church will celebrate its fifth birthday. The new building was completed five years ago, after the congregation de- cided to relocate from the hundred-year-old build- ing in Cumming. The new church is much larger than ne original church and of- fers a large gathering area, a social hall (available for rent), and a sanctuary seat- ing 600. For the past five years, the only exterior marker for the church was a sign on the west edge of the property. Earlier this year large lettering was mounted on the north- west side of the church, and in October, a new marquee sign was in- stalled at tile east side of the parking area. Fundraising efforts and construction work by the parishioners rffade possible a new electronic sign with three simple crosses on the east en- trance into the church on North Avenue (G-14) on the west edge of Norwalk. "This really tells people who we are and what's going on," said Domonick Cimino, who manages the physical fa- cilities for St. Johns. "We display Mass times, spe- cial events and commu- nity messages on the sign and we'll soon have light- ing for the crosses so they will stand out at night." Mass times at St. John the Apostle are at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday. The social hall is available for wedding re- ceptions and other events. St. John the Apostle Church PREP Christmas Program St. John the Apostle Catholic Church will hold their PREP Christmas Program Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 6:30 p.m. The program will tell the story of Jesus' birth through song and a student participation play. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade will present the program in three parts. Nearly 230 young pele will be involved in the production. Sharon Ewell, PREP coordinator, is excited about the program and the number of participants. "It's a good group," she said, "and it's amazing what they can do once they put their mind to it. We couldn't do it with- out the help of some great assistants. Jaki Livingston and Dan Larson are just two of the leaders that we count on."
