Thanks to all who had a part in getting this new equipment purchased and installed. Donated Deer Hides Benefit Disabled Veterans Hunters donated more than 4,300 deer hides to Elks Lodges across Iowa last year, which was an increase of over 1,000 hides from 2017. The deer hides are used by the Veterans Leather Pro- gram to make pro- fessionally-crafted leather gloves for veterans in wheelchairs and also turned in to leather used for therapy programs for recovering veterans. The Veterans Leather Program relies on the charity of hunters to donate their deer hides. Hunters willing to donate their hides are encouraged to contact the local Elks Lodge for drop off locations or visit www.elks.org/lodges to find the nearest lodge. The therapeutic kits and gloves are distributed at no cost to the veterans. Contact Lisa Widick at 208—360-6294 or ozzy Widick@gmail.com for more information. Garrett julian.garrett@legis.iowa.gov School Discipline Students disrupting classes has become a huge problem around the state. Teachers and administrators are reluctant to discipline disruptive students for fear of being criticized or even sued. It makes no sense for taxpayers to pay for classes where students are prevented from learning because other students are misbehaving. Teachers tell of being threatened or even physically assaulted. We hear stories about classrooms being cleared when disruptions occur, and the disrupting student allowed to go ahead and damage the classroom. Common sense would tell us to remove the misbehaving student and allow the class to continue. We must come up with some policies so that the disruptions are kept to a minimum and we have clear policies on how disruptions are dealt with. Teachers and administrators must be able to maintain order in our schools, and have protection from irresponsible criticism, and especially unfounded legal actions. An obvious question is where are the parents in this atmosphere. Unfortunately, it appears that too often the parents are not providing proper training for their children and are more likely to complain about any school discipline, than to teach their children to behave. This is an issue that we will look into when the legislature convenes in January. Hopefully we can agree on a solution. As always please feel free to contact me with your ideas or concerns.
