Alex Johnson Alex Johnson of Nor- walk High School is a fi- nalist in The Iowa State Bar Association's Young Law- yers Division "Know Your Constitution" Project. Alex is a junior at Norwalk and is a student in Law and You, taught by Micha- el Gavin. Alex and his teacher will have a chance to win an all expensive paid trip to Washington D.C. in February. One hundred finalists were selected from the more than 1,000 students across the State of Iowa who participated in the "Know Your Constitu- tion" Project. These final- ists will be honored at a luncheon held at the West Des Moines Marriott Ho- tel in West Des Moines Fri- day, Jan. 8. The luncheon will begin at 12:30 p.m. This year's Keynote Speak- er is the Honorable Justice David Wiggins of the Iowa Supreme Court. From the finalists, five students and their teachers will be chosen by a ran- dom drawing to attend the all expense paid, Close-Up Foundation's five day long education work session in Washington, D.C., in Feb- ruary 2016. The work ses- sions are designed to de- velop a deeper under- standing of government and the political process. The "Know Your Con- stitution" Project is de- signed to enrich students' understanding and appre- ciation of the Constitution. The students participating in the project were re- quired to familiarize them- selves with Constitution related issues. A quiz was completed by each partic- ipating student. An essay question accompanied the quiz in case of a tie. This year's essay topic involved a Constitutional question ':;' ........................ focused on the admissions ; process in higher educa- tion, specifically racial preference in evaluating candidates - similar to the : .......................... essay topic and recent de- velopments and rulings. This program is spon- sored by The Iowa State Bar Association, with ad- ditional funding from the Iowa State Bar Foundation and many of the county Bar Associations across Iowa. - (NAPS)---Seafood can be good for your health. The 245-member student band will be joining the UI football team for the Hawkeyes' sixth Rose Bowl appear- ance in Pasadena, Calif. Band members will make public appearances on and off field during their four-day stay, the highlight of which will be marching in the 127th Tournament of Roses Parade. Members also will participate in the pre- game and halftime shows, as well as play the national anthem before kickoff. The Hawkeyes face Stanford University; kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CST. Students in the Hawkeye Marching Band hail from 72 communities in Iowa, 51 in Illinois, and six other states. The band performs under director Kevin Kastens, a faculty member of the UI School of Music. The band will depart from Cedar Rapids on Tues- daN Dec. 29, and return to Iowa after the game.
