Egg Decorating Contest :
The Iowa Egg Council announced the winners of the 16th annual Egg Decorating
Contest, held August 9 at the Iowa State Fair. Carolyn Klein of Norwalk received a
$500 cash prize for her artistic egg titled, "Reflections on the State Fair." The contest,
held in the Agriculture Building, recognized Iowa artists for their creativity in deco-
rating a standard large-size chicken egg.
Klein's colorful egg featured a detailed painting of the Iowa State Fair, complete
with historical buildings, a vintage tractor, some livestock and a few carnival ride .
She glued tiny mirrors onto the egg to bring beautiful reflective qualitiest the scene.
"The mirrors reflect the image of the person looking, which individualizes the expe-
rience of viewing the Iowa State Fair," she said.
This year's Egg Decorating Contest included six impressive entries from across
the state. Second place honors went to Marjorie Nejdl of Ely who used acrylic paint
to create a "Polka Party" theme to represent the colorful Czech population of Iowa.
Receiving third place was Diane O'Hern of Eagle Grove with a painted henhouse
cutout filled with miniature sculptures of fresh eggs. Her entry was titled, "A Hen
Lays One Egg Every 25 Hours..."
These unique creations will make up a traveling egg art display that will be show-
cased at local libraries across the state: Find more details about the library tour and
participating artists at www.iowaegg.org.
There are many who talk on from ignorance rather than from knowledge, and
who find the former an inexhaustible fund of conversation.
