LAKEWOOD ELEMENTARY
By Jill Anderson, Principal
I read an article, A Habitat for 21st Century Learning, and it was referring to how
schools heed to be built to prepare students to thrive in a complex work environ-
ment. As I read it, I found myself becoming very proud of the design of Lakewood. I
feel as if the design is truly meeting the needs of 21st century learning. The design
attributes within Lakewood that support our learners include:
• Spaces to be shared by multiple groups
I'm sure that Lakewood will be used by school and community groups.
• Spaces that support strong family partnerships
We are planning to have Family Nights using our Commons area
• A safe and secure, yet welcoming environment
Having a secure vestibule directs people to either the main office or the lobby.
: Clustering of classrooms to create small learning environments
Each of the classrooms are in clusters and teachers are members of their own team.
• Flexible technology and appropriate display areas
As you can sense, I'm pretty proud of the forethought that was put into the design
of this building!
Instructional Rounds: This week, a group of superintendents came through the
building to Lnalyze our practices in the classroom. I will be working with a group of
teachers in taking that information and creating an action plan for future profes-
sional development time. For the rest of the year, the teachers will be concentrating

• Mapping the curriculum
• Using technology within the classroom and in formative assessment
• Analyzing data in order to remediate instruction
• Engagement in the classroom, increasing the rigor within instruction.
I always welcome feedback in order to create stronger lifelong learners with our
students.
Holiday Wish: This is the time of year when it is important that we reflect on the
first part of the school year. If you look at the calendar, it is already December and
close to half of the school year is gone. This is one of the best years that I can remem-
ber. I will honestly attribute the quality of the year to the staff, parents and students
at Lakewood.
I have been truly blessed with a great family-- --both personally and profession-
ally. There are many similarities. First, each .member of any family offers something
different. Each family member offers something distinctly different, but each piece
of the whole creates a complete being. Each of our students have a different tempera-
ment and offer different talents for the building. Each child walking in the building
learns in different ways. If there is one thing that is the same, it is the compassion that
they show for giving their best each day of the year.
Enjoy your families and your friends and make sure that you allow your child to
take the time needed to refresh themselves for the rest of the school year. I'm truly
sincere when I tell you how blessed I am to work with the community of Norwalk.
I'm very proud of the product that is produced. It is great to be a Warrior.
